The British startup RootWave has developed a method of weed control by using of electric current. This project won the Judges 'Choice Award' at the prestigious exhibition FoodBytes in London. This is reported by farmerscan.com with reference to the website fertilizerdaily.ru.
According to the head of the project Andy Dipros, this method could be an alternative to field tillage due to the growing restrictions on the use of chemical pesticides.
“Concerning such countries like France and Germany, where the scientists are looking for a way to get rid of Roundup products, and also taking into account the fact that about 66% of pesticides have already been forbidden, this technology may be the possible solution,” says Andy Dipros.
The adaptation of equipment for agriculture was begun with the successful launch of a manual cultivator for gardens and parks. In 2016, RootWave startup received a grant for 1.3 million euros for creation of autonomous agricultural equipment.
At the moment, the RootWave system is a device with attachments to the tractor. By the tillage of the field, a charge of current is supplied to the weeds through a special electrode, which extirpates the weeds. The system receives power through the power-takeoff shaft of the tractor. With the help of this installation, you can get rid of any weed with a height of 5 cm.
At the moment, developers are enticing investors, as well as partners among manufacturers of agricultural equipment. Commercial sales of cultivators are scheduled for 2020.
